Man fined for impaired driving of lawn mower; Police called after he tries to run down neighbours

A 57-year-old Bognor man who drove his lawn mower at his neighbours while drunk pleaded guilty Thursday to impaired driving and was fined $600 and banned from driving any motor vehicle for one year - including his mower.
Arthur Carefoot had repeatedly pulled out his neighbours' survey stakes in an ongoing dispute. On May 25, after the latest confrontation, he drove his riding mower at the woman living next door, Crown attorney David Hay said.
The woman's husband pushed her out of the way to safety.

She later told police Carefoot's attitude was "belligerent."
When police visited Carefoot at his home, "he could barely stand up," Hay said.
Police charged him with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, assault with the mower and removing wooden survey stakes.
The Crown only proceeded with impaired driving.
A riding mower is considered a motor vehicle and driving it anywhere while impaired is illegal.
Hay said Carefoot had at least six prior drinking and driving convictions between 1968 and 1988, but none since.
Defence lawyer Brian Renken said the neighbours no longer live next to Carefoot.
Justice Julia Morneau's sentence also included a one year of probation during which Carefoot must not contact or associate with his former neighbours.
